Re: herman tortoise setup

Hi HermanTort101 (sorry, don't know your name), and welcome to The Tortoise Table! And many congratulations on getting your little Hermann's Tortoise -- they are a great species, and he will really love the fact that you have made him his own tortoise table -- and it sounds a good size too. Re: Garden centre friendly

Hi Char, It sounds like you've got things well in hand and are going to be an excellent tortoise keeper! It's so good that you are doing your research and asking questions before you get your tortoise -- so many people don't and they end up with unnecessary problems. Here's a link to a care sheet fo...

Hi Charchar (sorry, don't know your name), and welcome to The Tortoise Table! Congratulations too on getting a Marginated tortoise (they are a lovely species)! LOL, there was a very amusing typo in the first line of your message -- I do hope that your new tortoise is a Marginated one and not a Marin...

Re: health check frequency

Hi Kathleen, The reason for soaking is that it is important for tortoises to keep well hydrated (they can go for a long time without food but they can get dehydrated easily if they are indoors under lights). Dehyddration can lead to many problems (including kidney problems), so we encourage them to ...

Whoa -- you didn't tell me that it has a bell hanging from it -- does that mean that Bella rings the bell when she's finished her food so that you can fill it up again? She is one iintelligent little tortoise! I just found this photo of it all filled up (not the best tortoise food, but it gives a go...

Ooh, is that the wire contraption hanging from the side? I thought that was a guard for a lamp or something. What a brilliant idea -- I might get one myself, as I'm sure that Doris and Dolly would like that a lot -- and it would also stop them from weeing on their food before they eat it! Thanks for...

Re: What is wrong with my indian star tortoise?

Hi Kanda, Many thanks for contacting us, and I'm sorry that your little Indian Star seems to be unwell. In the photo her eyes do seem to be a bit swollen, and it is interesting that in the daytime they seem fine. Sometimes the cause of swollen eyes is environmental, and sometimes it is more physical...

Ahh, a woman after my own heart. I'm exactly the same and really love a bargain and am often to be found at the sales (my only problem is ever decreasing space!). I also volunteer at an Oxfam shop several days a week, so more bargains available (not plants though). I will try to look up Amelanchier ...

Oh dear, I'm so sorry about that! I think a visit to the vet is a good idea, and it's possible that he could need tube feeding for a short time to get him going again. You and he have had such bad luck -- I do hope that something is found soon to bring him back to full health and appetite -- keep us...

Hi Heather, I'm a bit confused. How did you try and search for scabious before you found it in the A-Z section? I've just now typed Scabious into the search box that is in the upper right-hand corner of every page and two entries came up: Scabious and Knautia Macedonica. The search box is by far the...

Re: Please can you help with identifying the plant/weed that will not go

It's really hard to tell with a photo of one leaf, looking straight down on it, as there are quite a few plants that look a bit like that. Are the undersides of the leaf white? If so then it is probably Coltsfoot and here is our entry for it: https://www.thetortoisetable.org.uk/plant-database/viewpl...

Poor little chap! Ooh, this is a dilemma, and I expect you'll get different opinions from different people. First of all, some questions: Have you been keeping a records of his weight? If he has maintained his weight or even gained a bit then I don't think he is starving himself. The problem with fo...

Re: Rabbit Poo!

I agree with Lin that you should try to keep them separate if you can, but in the wild tortoises do eat the poo of other animals (and in captiviy I have seen them try and eat bird poo too). However, it can mean that they pick up parasites from this, so a test once every year or so does no harm, but ...

Re: New outdoor enclosure

Ahh yes, digging is a Horsfield specialty! I'm not sure why they don't want the dandelions, and really even though it is hot they should still be tempted by food (mine seem to be fine outdoors in this heat at the moment). Do give it until the weekend and see what happens. Are they getting hydrated? ...

Re: New outdoor enclosure

Oh dear -- what a shame! I can't remember where you live, but the hot weather we've been having for the last week or so might have made them want to aestivate (it's like hibernation except in the heat). In the wild tortoises are active first thing in the morning, and then hide away for a lot of the ...

REHOMED - Two Hermann's needing a forever home

Honey and Harry the two Hermann's, are around 6 years old and located near Bathgate, which is sandwiched between Glasgow and Edinburgh. They need to find a good, tortoise experienced forever home. Their owner feels they need more than they can offer right now and so has made the brave decision to re...

Hi Daire and welcome to The Tortoise Table! Hi, and thanks for contacting us. Some Horsfields don't seem to drink from their bowl and some do (I have one that does and one that doesn't). Hi Joe,
Great to hear from you, and also to know that your Lumisol is still working really well. Susan, who had that frame made, used your article and instructions and she has been super happy with it. Isn't it nice that the sun has finally come out in the UK? I thought it never would!
