Red Valerian?

Torkoal the Russian Tortoise has a very boring diet, with a general base of young dandelions, broad plantain, ribwort plantain & sowthistle (with the occasional hawksbit, cats-ear, deadnettle, lambs lettuce with a very occasional rocket, clover, hedge mustard, field mustard etc) I think I have f...

Woodchips - BEWARE

Just passing on information from the vet about wood-chips for tortoises Torkoal (my horsefield tortoise) has had issues with his front feet Normally a horsefield tortoises foot (in the wild) plunges nail first into the sand, however wood-chips cannot replicate this due to their size, instead creatin...

Deadnettle?

We have just relocated, from the Fylde Coast in Lancashire to Leeds! Torkoal (the Horsefield Tortoise) was less than impressed and went on hunger strike for 2 days, back to normal now. Leeds has some good base plants for him, broad & narrow Plantains everywhere and enough Dandelions to fill a cr...

Re: Dietary issues

I assume the vitamin content of Nutrabal is much lower than that of Aces High/Arkvits? I originally thought Nutrabal was just Calcium + D3 but it is loaded with vitamins too

Today is his day off food, though he did have a nibble of some coriander just to see if it liked it, he does!

Re: Dietary issues

He can't go outside too often, I live in a flat with just a back yard. I will start bringing him over to my local park under very close supervision for little excursions I'll but some Nutrobal :) Is Cuttlefish an adequate replacement for calcium carbonate powder or is the latter better? Also I have ...

Re: Dietary issues

I saw something called Aces High, but I don't want to overdose on vitamins! Would Aces High used once a week and Nutrobal used twice a week and Calcidust used the rest of the time be sufficient? Im not really sure what the best thing is for him, didn't get much time to read up on these things before...

Re: Dietary issues

I have a list of all the plants listed as Green - Safe To Feed, however my plant identification skills are still somewhat lacking!

Is there a rough guide to how much Nutrobal to give? I don't want to give too much!

Re: 'Common' weeds I can't identify!

Awesome! Many thanks!
I 'think' there is a field full of ground elder, but it can look so similar to other plants (yarrow, elderberry etc) I am worried about misidentification
One day I'll be able to identify them myself...I hope!

'Common' weeds I can't identify!

Hoping you can help widen the diet of my Horsefield :) Picture 3 It is still blooming, when may hinder identification, though the leaves look somewhat unusual Picture 2 I am 99% sure this is a Geranium growing wild in my back garden, is this the case? If so I will feed small amounts of it so as to e...

Dietary issues

I am trying to vary his diet a little more (Torkoal - Horsefield) Currently he has 1-2 days of no food per week as I have advised When he does eat, his diet consists of: 50% Broadleaf/Ribwort Plantain 15% Young Dandelion The rest is made up of varying amounts of Basil (his favourite) Fuschia flowers...

Re: UVB Light & Set-up concerns

Many thanks, I will obtain a (working, accurate) thermometer this time, The lamp can be moved up or down via removing and re-attaching via a screw (the connecting wooden piece has numerous holes in it so you can choose how high the lamp should be) Will hold back on buying a bulb until I get a thermo...

UVB Light & Set-up concerns

Good morning! I have had my beloved Torkoal (horsefield tortoise) for maybe 8-9 months, I hear that mercury vapour bulbs can 'wear out' so even though they still work light-wise, they stop giving off as much UVB, is this the case? I tend to get a mercury vapour bulb, more expensive than heat and UVB...
