Re: First year of hibernating

Hi Kate, it might be worth posting again as sometimes posts get missed. I understand you being nervous about hibernation, I had a little tortoise who I adopted when he was 6 who had never been hibernated, sadly a poorly little soul, too much damage before i got him who died. I then adopted a 30 year...

Worm testing kits

Hi Nina, i hope you and the girls are well.
I was just wondering if there's anywhere you recommend for worm testing kits? I can't recall who I used last year.
Thanks

Weight fkuctuation

Hi Nina, hi Lin I've not really been in touch much since Boris came out of hibernation in February. As a reminder, Boris came to me just over 2 years ago from an elderly gentleman who was reducing his collection. Boris overwintered in 2019 (his first winter with me) then last year with help from him...

Happy tortoise

Hi just thought I'd share a couple of snaps of Boris, Horsfield doing some extreme sunbathing a month after coming out of hibernation. I changed his heat and light set up from a single MVB to seperate heat, UV and daylight lamps and he's loving it. This was my first hibernation although Boris has de...

Re: Topsoil

Hi Dan,
I've always used wickes sterilized top soil but have had to sieve through it to remove bits of plastic etc. Not aware of any others I'm afraid.

Re: Wind down

Thanks Nina, I'm using a wind down record based on the one you shared of one of Doris's wind downs, really useful and has given me some 'structure' to work with, especially having notes of your observations for Doris. Just put his light on and he's awake but prefers to keep his head under his towel....

Re: Wind down

Thanks for the reassurance Lin. He has a selection of towels or bits of towels, probably about 8 altogether. Some are already in his hibernation box in his cooler waiting for him, along with some substrate for him to dig down in, towels on top. I think he s a hardy little soul and I'm sure if he cou...

Wind down

Hi Nina / Lin With great trepidation I've started Boris s wind down and he's on day 2. My first hibernation, his 30-40th. He was eating less and less and managed just 2 sow thistle flowers on Wednesday so i decided to go for it. He's been reluctantly basking but then shuffles off into the dark and d...

Re: Small nasal bubble! *update in comments*

Hi there, just reading your post and about how to keep water warm when bathing tortoise. I fill the sink first with hottish water, only an inch or two deep then I fill his washing up bowl with warm water and put this in the sink. Because his bowl is surrounded by hot water the water in his bowl stay...

Re: Hibernation Dithering

Hi and thanks for all the info Nina, I 'll measure the air temps like you suggest and i think I'm going to take out about half the depth of substrate, dry it out and also give him some towels to hide in. We actually spoke a few weeks ago by phone and discussed different hibernation mediums. Boris (4...

Re: Hibernation Dithering

Just been reading these posts and lots of useful info thanks. Boris is also hiding away and sleeping most of the time too but still has a healthy appetite if I put the food (he's a sow thistle flower addict!) where his good eye can see it. Still a worrying time though, being my first hibernation. I ...

Re: Any idea on this please?

Thanks ladies, yes it is near our bird feeders although we only have peanuts and sunflower seeds in the feeders however it's quite likely some of our feathered visitors have eaten elsewhere then pooped in our garden. That certainly seems to be what happened with the wild lettuce which sprouted in Bo...
