Re: Seagulls!
Thanks for the advice. I think we had chicken wire in mind so will look into that. Dee’s run has got sectional lids which lift up and hook onto the fence when not needed so might try that.

Seagulls!
We have finally made the move from Buckingham to the Isle of Wight. Jack (17yr old Hermann’s) has spent the winter with his Auntie Dee & her brood of torties & is now awake and hopefully joining us in a couple of weeks. We will be starting from scratch with his outdoor enclosure and hopefull...

Re: Caffeinated Tortoise??
Thanks Nina, I’ll have a read of those. Yes we’ve got the usual dandelions, plantain, mallow, sow thistle etc but he can be picky if it’s too near the coast or after a storm - I guess they have higher salt levels. I was a bit stuck and only a tiny bit of dandelion around the house today hence a larg...

Caffeinated Tortoise??
Opinions please! Do you think caffeine from used coffee grounds would be taken up by sedum and then get ingested by Jack? We have grown a big tub of sedum at our holiday bungalow on the island as we don’t have a private garden. My husband empties his coffee grounds into our tubs several times a week...

Re: Weight loss in hibernation
Bless his little heart - he has had a bask under his light, a drink from his bowl & then trundled off to his usual corner to go to sleep .... then realised he had fresh dandelions & had a feast. Another kip with one claw on the remaining stalks then woke again for a late night snack before t...

Re: Weight loss in hibernation
Definitely no see or poo - he has his own towels we use when travelling & as he seems to like them his hibernation box is lined with these rather than substrate so it is easy to tell if he “goes”! I was planning to get him up at 8 weeks anyway so will grit my teeth & hold fast for now. Thank...

Re: Weight loss in hibernation
Thanks Nina Jack is now 13yr old & went in the fridge at 716g (I forgot to weigh before wind down) Definitely no wee as I check this every other day. He’s lost 17g over the 6 weeks. I was feeling confident that he was doing well until I saw the new guidelines & also looked back at last year ...

Weight loss in hibernation
Hi there guys
Jack is now just over 6 weeks into fridge hibernation & looks well. I’m just having a panic over how much weight loss to allow. I did a google & found a site saying any more than 1% in a month & you should wake up. Jack has lost about 2-3% now. Is this ok? Thanks, Siân

Re: Spiff -- Hermann's Tortoise needs a new home
Thanks Nina Yes, it’s Buckingham Dee - we live next door to each other! It’s probably too early for Spiff but Kate (the hopeful owner) is coming over to see my set up next week and hopefully Dee’s as well. Jack is hibernating at the moment bless him. I changed his substrate back to small pellets (wh...

Re: Spiff -- Hermann's Tortoise needs a new home
Hi Nina - would Spiff be suitable for a beginner (with the support of a Herman’s owner (me) & my lovely tortoise mummy friend Dee? I’ve just been chatting to a local lady who dearly wants a tortoise & I recommended adopting rather than buying a baby. She may well pop up on here but I thought...

Re: Toilet troubles!
Thanks, I’m so used to the toothpaste that this threw me, especially as Jack didn’t eat as much as usual yesterday. He is now under his light, looking smug & a little distainful at my panic!

Toilet troubles!
Ok wise tortoise peeps - just got up to find a sleepy Jack (light not on yet) finishing his morning ablutions, but rather than a clear wee with a bit of toothpaste-like urate in it, we have a puddle of skimmed milk! Liquid urate? Mixed wee & urate? Never seen this before. Is it normal?

Jack is loving the new "Tortoise Pantry" with a variety of yummy plants & flowers but sedum will always be his favourite!

Re: Dust!
Thanks Nina - not had time to try suggestions yet as Jack & I are having a weekend together in the IoW (Jack is a very lucky tortoise & has a Holiday Table!). I think I have some more substrate in the garage so will add more - it's only about 1.5-2 inches deep as Jack really doesn't dig. I w...

Re: Dust!
Loving the tights image!! I think some of the problem is just that we don't clean every day 😱 - I'm sure if we could stop it building up, that would help. Jack is in a table not a viv, but it does have a glass front. I'd like to change that to solid at some point as I think he can see out & gets...

Dust!
I'm thinking there is no magic answer to this, but my Husband is despairing of the dust levels in our living room where Jack lives. He came to us on a pellet substrate which he had for a couple of years with his previous owners & seemed low dust but not very natural or comfortable so I dutifully...

I love it when he sleeps like that, I figure if he sleeps with it all "hanging out" he must feel really safe & relaxed
