Landscaping

Landscaping is generally thought to cover any alteration to the visible features of an area of land, including living plant life and animals, the natural shape and terrain of the land (including water features), as well as any objects such as rocks or sculptures, and architectural structures such as houses and other buildings.

When we talk about landscaping for tortoises we are referring to constructing and maintaining safe and attractive indoor and outdoor areas in which our tortoises can live and thrive. Constructing great tortoise enclosures requires an understanding of how plants and tortoises can happily co-exist, a knowledge of what plants are best suited to a particular climate as well as to a particular species of tortoise, what features will provide interest and shelter for the tortoise, and an eye for design, a knowledge of plants, and a willingness to 'dig in' and make some big changes!

In this section of The Tortoise Table website we will suggest ideas for:

  • designing and constructing attractive indoor and outdoor tortoise enclosures;
  • how to design a 'weed patch' that will provide food for your tortoise but is also aesthetically pleasing and an attractive addition to your garden;
  • how to ensure that your landscaping -- especially of the indoor enclosure -- is free from disease and safety hazards;
  • how to ensure that the natural hazards that might exist in your garden (toxic plants, potential escape routes, danger from predators, ponds, etc.) are made safe for your tortoise

and much more.

We welcome any suggestions for articles in this section, so please contact us with your ideas, stories, and suggestions.
