Maltese Cross (Jerusalem Cross, Nonesuch, Flower of Bristol)

 Do not Feed
  • Common Name: Maltese Cross (Jerusalem Cross, Nonesuch, Flower of Bristol)
  • Latin Name: Lychnis chalcedonica; syn. Silene chalcedonica
  • Family Name: Caryophyllaceae

Plants of the Caryophyllaceae family, including the Lychnis, contain the toxic glycoside saponin.  Saponin has the potential to cause red blood cells to rupture and is only broken down after thorough cooking, so although not strictly toxic, it is best to avoid this plant.

See Campion, and Lychnis.
