Wild Lettuce (Bitter Lettuce; Opium Lettuce; Poisonous Lettuce)

 Do not Feed
  • Common Name: Wild Lettuce (Bitter Lettuce; Opium Lettuce; Poisonous Lettuce)
  • Latin Name: Lactuca virosa
  • Family Name: Asteraceae/Compositae

Like its close relative, the Prickly Lettuce, the sap of the Wild Lettuce is a latex containing lactucarium, which has strong narcotic and sedative properties and is therefore not suitable for feeding to tortoises.

In the UK, this plant can be found growing wild in the Southeast and East of England, but is relatively rare in the rest of the country and not found in Ireland.
