Safe to feed,  but not to be confused with the  Common, or True Valerian (Valeriana officinalis), which has a sedative effect and should be avoided.   

Although a wild flower, Red Valerian can often be found growing in UK gardens.   Some varieties have red flowers and some have white flowers.
